Between November 13 and 16, 2024, the Abi/Yakurr Federal Constituency of Cross River State witnessed a transformative medical intervention spearheaded by Hon. Alex Egbona, a leader deeply committed to the welfare of his people. The comprehensive medical outreach was more than just a healthcare initiative; it was a life-changing experience that brought hope, healing and empowerment to thousands of residents. The outreach provided free medical services to residents of Abi and Yakurr, two areas often grappling with limited access to quality healthcare. From general consultations to treatments for specific ailments, the event catered to people of all ages. Physicians, nurses and other health professionals worked tirelessly to ensure no one seeking help left unattended.Among the standout features of the program were screenings for common conditions such as hypertension and diabetes alongside treatment for malaria, skin infections, fibroid, hernia and respiratory illnesses. Many residents expressed relief and gratitude for receiving prompt care that would otherwise have been out of their financial reach.“I have not been able to see a doctor for months due to lack of money. Today, not only was I seen but I also received medicines for free,” said Mrs. Ekaette, a mother of four who attended the outreach. The initiative didn’t stop at treating immediate health issues. Recognizing the importance of capacity building, Hon. Egbona incorporated a training program for health workers in maternal and child health. This was particularly significant for a region where maternal and infant mortality rates are a concern.Health workers were trained in modern practices for antenatal care, safe delivery, postnatal management and child immunization. The ripple effect of this training is expected to extend far beyond the event, equipping local healthcare providers to deliver improved services in their respective Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCs).Hon. Egbona’s vision for better healthcare was not limited to treating people; it included strengthening the system itself. During the outreach, essential medical supplies were distributed to selected PHCs in the constituency. These included hospital beds, mattresses, mosquito nets, and other consumables vital for effective healthcare delivery. The donation of mosquito nets in particular was lauded as a proactive step toward malaria prevention, a leading health issue in the area. PHC Coordinator for Yakurr, Dr. Ibiang Eko and her Abi counterpart, Mrs. Christy Iwara expressed optimism about how these materials would improve patient care.Dr. John Udom, a healthcare worker in Abi, remarked, “These materials will greatly enhance our ability to serve patients. The beds and mattresses mean we can admit more people comfortably, and the mosquito nets will save lives by preventing malaria.”The initiative of Hon. Alex Egbona exemplifies the impact of visionary leadership at the grassroots level. By addressing immediate healthcare needs, empowering health workers and investing in medical infrastructure, he has set a precedent for holistic and sustainable development in the Abi/Yakurr Federal Constituency. This outreach has been adjudged as one that not only alleviated the health challenges faced by many but also highlighted the role of constituency leaders in bridging gaps in essential services. For residents, it was more than a health intervention. It was a message of care, responsibility and hope. Its impact will resonate in healthier lives, improved healthcare services and a stronger community spirit. Indeed, Hon. Egbona has demonstrated that true leadership goes beyond policies. It lies in the tangible transformation of lives.
