SENATOR BEGS SENATE: Save us, kidnappers are everywhere in Sokoto, police nowhere to be found
Nigerian Senate has been urged to come to the aid of the people of Sokoto East, an area said to have been taking over by armed kidnappers.
The senator representing the senatorial district, Abdullahi Ibrahim Gobir, made the appeal during plenary of the Senate on Wednesday.
The Senator who had the floor through order 43, regretted that while kidnappers have overran the entire Sokoto East made up of eight local government areas, that police are nowhere to be found.
According to him, a recent attack by the marauders saw 13 people fall into their captivity. The abductors he said, are now demanding various sums of ransom, in order to release the victims.
He said, “In the eastern part of Sokoto comprising of 8 local governments, kidnapping is on the rise which occurs every day and as I speak everywhere have been overran by kidnappers.
“Recently, about 13 persons have been kidnapped in a single swoop by abductors. The Police have disappeared from their posts in the affected places.”
Noting that women have been the major targets of the kidnappers, Senator Gobi said, “even where I went during my campaign has become unsecured, there is no day that women have not been kidnapped.”
In his response, Senate President Bukola Saraki said the Senate Committee on Police Affairs should look into the incident and make sure that something is done about the security situation in the affected local government areas.
