The Senate expressed strong disapproval toward officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service due to their reported inhumane treatment of inmates in their custody.

This reaction stemmed from a series of inquiries directed at the officers by lawmakers during the 2024 budget hearing with the National Assembly joint committees on Interior held on Thursday.

Senator Adams Oshiomhole (APC, Edo North) specifically asked for a detailed breakdown of the current inmate population and security dogs, as well as information on their daily feeding routines.

“I would like to see a breakdown of how you feed these inmates, if you say you feed inmates 3 times a day with N250 each.

How many dogs do you have and how much does it cost to feed them daily”

Meanwhile, Senator Ireti Kingibe, seemingly dissatisfied with the response received, raised concerns about the welfare of the inmates, querying, ‘How many medical professionals and veterinary doctors are available to care for both the inmates and the dogs

Prior to answering this query, Nababa and his team were seen chatting amongst themselves just before they answered this question, giving the impression that they were lacking the necessary information.

Minutes later, he responded saying, “We have 75 Medical doctors and consultants, 6 veterinary doctors who cover Lagos, Kaduna, Owerri and some of them cover more than one state and they move from place to place.

The veterinary doctors have different nurses under them.
