Senate Approves Establishment of Southwest Development Commission into Law

The Senate on Thursday passed the South West Development Commission Establishment Bill into law on Thursday.

Senate consider the passage of the bill after the report from the committee on special duties, presented by Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan of Borno Central Senatorial Districts.

The bill was approved following the examination of clauses, schedules, and an explanatory memorandum.

The establishment of the Southwest Development Commission is entrusted with the responsibility, among others, of receiving and managing funds from the allocation of the federation accounts, including donations and gifts, for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of infrastructural damages in the region, and addressing ecological, environmental, and global developmental challenges. This is to be implemented by 2024.

During the passage of the bill, Deputy Senate President Senator Jibrin I Barau presided over the plenary and emphasized the significance of establishing the Southwest Development Commission.

He said that the commission is tasked with managing funds allocated from the Federation account, as well as donations and gifts, for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of infrastructural damages in the region. “Furthermore, the commission is mandated to address ecological, environmental, and developmental challenges as established in 2024.”

The Deputy Senate President commended the committee on special duties, led by Senator Kaka, for their exceptional work.

He expressed his appreciation for their dedication and professionalism in executing their responsibilities. He also acknowledged the committee members for their unwavering support and diligence.

The Deputy Senate President highlighted the importance of the bill in addressing the challenges faced by the southwestern part of the country, including ecological issues.

He emphasized that enhancing the region’s environment will have a positive impact on the nation as a whole.
