Rivers Crisis: No Supreme Court Judgment Against Governor Fubara, Speaker Oko Jumbo – Opposition Coalition

The Opposition Coalition has dismissed claims that the Supreme Court delivered a judgment against Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Victor Oko Jumbo. The coalition described such reports as false narratives being peddled by disgruntled elements.

Clarifying the court’s verdict, the opposition lawmakers stated that contrary to speculations, Speaker Oko Jumbo remains in full control of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

Speaking on behalf of the coalition, its spokesperson, Ikenga Ugochinyere, explained that the Supreme Court ruling actually favored Governor Fubara, as it was based on his voluntary withdrawal of the appeal concerning the 2024 budget through his lead counsel, Yusuf Ali (SAN).

“Governor Fubara did not lose any case at the Supreme Court. He withdrew his appeal over the 2024 budget, which has already been spent and executed,” Ugochinyere stated.

He further clarified that no court ruling favored the pro-Wike, sacked lawmakers. Instead, the governor’s decision to withdraw his appeal was informed by the fact that the 2024 budget had already been fully implemented, rendering the case irrelevant.

“The Supreme Court simply struck out the case because the 2024 budget has expired, and the 2025 Appropriation Act is now in effect,” he added.

Assuring Nigerians, particularly the people of Rivers State, Ugochinyere reaffirmed that Victor Oko Jumbo remains the legitimate Speaker of the House of Assembly, urging the public to disregard political propaganda being spread by those he described as “sore losers.”

He also called on the media to uphold truthfulness in their reportage by verifying facts before disseminating legal matters.

Furthermore, Ugochinyere encouraged Governor Fubara to remain focused on delivering good governance to the people of Rivers State and to ignore political distractions.

“The Supreme Court ruled today on the appeal over the 2024 budget, which was voluntarily withdrawn by Governor Fubara because the budget cycle has ended. There is no need to waste time discussing a budget that has already been fully spent and implemented,” he explained.

He criticized the sacked pro-Wike lawmakers, led by Martin Amaewhule, for allegedly celebrating the Supreme Court’s decision out of ignorance.

“For their information and for others who care, the Supreme Court’s ruling was simply a result of Governor Fubara’s withdrawal of the appeal. In his notice of withdrawal, the governor informed the three-man panel of Justices that events had overtaken his suit,” Ugochinyere noted.

“For those unaware, the events referenced by Governor Fubara include the fact that the 2024 budget has been fully executed, with the 2025 Appropriation Act already in effect, making the case legally irrelevant.”

He further reiterated that Speaker Oko Jumbo remains in control of the Rivers State House of Assembly, emphasizing that the pro-Wike sacked lawmakers, along with their leader Martin Amaewhule, remain removed from office.
