Reps to investigate non implementation of plastic policy in Nigeria

0 160

The house of Representatives has called on the federal ministry of environment to carry out a sustainable campaign on the dangers of nylon and plastic waste in Nigeria.

These resolution followed a motion sponsored by a Representative Chukwuma Umeoji on the need to curtail nylon and plastic pollution during Tuesday’s plenary.

The house noted that over fifteen per cent of the solid waste generated in major cities across the country were from nylons and plastics.

Expressing concern over burning of plastic wastes and the poisonous gases produced from it, the house further noted that organic waste poses a lesser hazard to the environment due to its decomposition and urged the Federal Ministry of Environment to initiate a programme for collection and recycling of nylon and plastic wastes across the country.

The house however mandated the committee on environment to investigate the circumstances surrounding the non-implementation of plastic policy of the federal environment in collaboration with states and report back within four weeks for further legislative action.
