Reps Summon Customs Boss Over Retirement Controversy, Threaten to Arrest NIMC DG

Reps Summon Customs Boss Over Refusal to Retire, Threaten to Arrest NIMC DG

The House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions has summoned the Comptroller General of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, to appear before it next Tuesday. The summons follows a petition alleging that several senior officials of the service have refused to retire despite reaching their mandatory retirement age.

The petition, filed by the Obasi-Pherson Help Foundation, accuses certain Assistant Comptrollers and Comptrollers of deliberately overstaying their tenure. Those named in the petition include Assistant Comptrollers Imam, Umar, and Egwu, as well as Comptrollers Awe, Fatia, and Faith.

Issuing the summons, the House Committee emphasized the importance of accountability in public service.

“Nigerians deserve to know the truth, and only the Comptroller General can provide clarity on this matter,” said Committee Chairman Mike Etaba. “We are elected to serve the people, and part of that service is ensuring that government agencies function effectively. In a time when many young Nigerians are seeking employment, it is unacceptable for those due for retirement to remain in office.”

He further assured that the Committee would approach the matter fairly, saying, “We do not take sides. Every case is treated on merit to ensure justice is served.”

NIMC DG Faces Arrest Over Breach of Contract

In a related development, the Committee has threatened to order the arrest of the Director General of the Nigerian Identity Management Commission (NIMC) if she fails to personally appear before them to address allegations of a contract breach.

A private firm, Truid Limited, has accused the NIMC of violating a licensing agreement related to a state-of-the-art software development project deployed at the commission.

According to E. R. Opara, counsel for Truid Limited, the firm developed and deployed a tokenization system for the NIMC in 2021 without requiring any financial commitment from the commission. Under the agreement, Truid was to recover its investment through service provider transactions, with proceeds shared between the parties over a 10-year period.

The petition alleges that operations were proceeding smoothly until the appointment of the current NIMC DG, who has since attempted to terminate the agreement.

Expressing frustration over the NIMC DG’s repeated absences from hearings, Committee Chairman Mike Etaba issued a stern warning:

“If she fails to appear at the next hearing, we will have no choice but to direct the Inspector General of Police to compel her attendance. No government official should treat constituted authority with such disregard. This kind of behavior will no longer be tolerated.”
