REPS CALLS FOR PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE ON THE FIRST NIGER BRIDGE.

The motion was moved about the deplorable conditions of the first Niger bridge and call for the preventive maintenance of the bridge at the plenary on Thursday.
The house said that the bridge was badly damaged during the Nigeria civil war and subsequently repaired and has been of immense benefit to Nigerians and foreign nations alike who ply the eastern and south south routes. The house also made it known that the bridge is the only link between the south east and south south, south west and some northern states as the second bridge is still at it’s early stage of construction.
The house expressed that the bridge is at the verge of collapse which if it happens will lead to traffic build up and excruciating pains to commuters who sometimes experience delay up to eight or more hours in the bid to cross the bridge. According to the house, The poor state of the bridge has made the people of Ekiti to consider the second Niger bridge project as an alternative route to contain the very heavy traffic across the first niger bridge from all parts of the country.
The members of the House of Reps mandated a committee on works to pay a working visit to the first Niger bridge to asses it condition the house also urge the federal ministry of power and housing to undertake urgent technical assessment as well as immediate reinforcement, repairs and rehabilitation of the first Niger bidge to avoid it collapse.
