NEF Condemns Alleged Mistreatment of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, Demands Akpabio’s Resignation
The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has strongly condemned the alleged mistreatment of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, calling for an independent investigation into the matter.
In a statement released on Wednesday, NEF spokesperson, Professor Abubakar Jika Jiddere, criticized the reported public intimidation of the female senator, describing it as unacceptable, especially in an era where gender sensitivity and inclusiveness are being globally championed.
NEF also demanded Akpabio’s immediate resignation to allow for a fair and unbiased investigation, free from potential interference.
“The NEF is closely monitoring the unfolding conflict in the Senate between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Distinguished Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District,” Jiddere stated.
“It is deeply concerning that, at a time when there is a global push for gender sensitivity, inclusiveness, and respect for fundamental human rights—especially the dignity of women in high-level public service—a female senator is being subjected to public intimidation and mistreatment. The treatment of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan by the Senate President is completely unacceptable.”
The forum expressed disappointment over what it described as an abuse of power by Akpabio, warning that such actions undermine the integrity of the Senate and set a dangerous precedent.
“In light of this, the NEF calls for an immediate, independent investigation into the matter to uphold the sanctity of the Nigerian Senate. Furthermore, the NEF demands that the Senate President step aside to ensure a fair and unbiased investigation, free from any potential interference,” Jiddere emphasized.
“As the highest law-making institution in Nigeria, the Senate must uphold the values of fairness, justice, and respect. Any deviation from these principles risks damaging Nigeria’s reputation in the international community.”
The forum urged authorities to take swift action to safeguard the integrity of the Senate and uphold democratic values.
