Lagos Assembly Sets Up Committee to Probe N24 Billion Light Up Project

The Lagos State House of Assembly has constituted a six-member committee to investigate the N24 billion Light Up Lagos project executed by the state government under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The initiative, led by the Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, aims to provide residents with a reliable and sustainable energy supply.

During a plenary session on Monday, the Speaker of the House, Mojisola Meranda, appointed committee members, including Abiodun Tobun, Desmond Elliot, Stephen Ogundipe, Abiodun Orekoya, Femi Saheed, and Sabur Oluwa.

Meranda emphasized the importance of collective efforts to illuminate Lagos, highlighting that the project is essential for enhancing safety and protecting lives and property. The committee is expected to submit its report within two weeks.

“This is the only way to mitigate insecurity. When areas are well-lit, people can easily identify who is approaching and assess potential threats. That is the essence of this project,” Meranda stated.

She further stressed the need for local government chairmen to integrate street lighting into road contracts, ensuring they are implemented simultaneously to avoid extra government expenses on post-construction modifications.

“If we can manufacture transformers through the Ministry of Power, then street lights—especially solar-powered ones—should be part of our fundamental infrastructure. All stakeholders must collaborate to illuminate Lagos,” she added.

Meranda also called on both state and local governments to improve their maintenance strategies to ensure the sustainability of the Light Up Lagos project.
