IGP Advocates Removal of Police from Envelope Budgetary Regime
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has called for the removal of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) from the envelope budgetary regime to ensure accurate funding projections and enhance the operational efficiency of the Force.
Egbetokun explained that such a shift would provide greater financial flexibility and ensure the availability of funds necessary for effective policing. He also proposed the creation of a Special Operations Account dedicated exclusively to addressing national security emergencies. Additionally, he advocated for increased allocations for Overhead and Capital Expenditure.
The IGP made these recommendations during his presentation of the 2025 budget to the Joint Committees on Police Affairs and Police Institutions at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja.
In his submission, the IGP outlined key priorities, including the construction of five new zonal headquarters and the allocation of resources to support tactical units crucial to internal security operations. He further urged the approval of dedicated budget lines for police training institutions to enhance capacity building across the Force.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP also emphasized the importance of the prompt and full release of appropriated funds in 2025 to ensure the smooth functioning of the NPF.
“The Inspector-General of Police expressed his gratitude to the Joint Committees for their engagement during this critical budgetary session. He reiterated the Force’s commitment to working collaboratively with the committees to reposition the NPF in alignment with the shared vision of a secure and stable nation,” the statement read.
The IGP was accompanied by the Force Management Team and other senior officers during the budget presentation. In attendance were key stakeholders, including Senator Abdulhamid Mallam Maidori (Chairman, Senate Committee on Police Affairs), Honourable Makki Yalleman (Chairman, House Committee on Police Affairs), Senator (Dr.) Ibrahim Gaidam (Minister of Police Affairs), DIG Hashimu Argungu (Rtd.), Chairman of the Police Service Commission, and other distinguished members of the committees.
