HON. JIMBO CALLS FOR END OF FOOD INSECURITY IN NIGERIA
Deputy Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on National Planning and Economic Development, Hon. Clement Jimbo has called on the Federal Government to end food insecurity in Nigeria.
Rep. Jimbo, who is the Honourable Member Representing Abak, Etim Ekpo & Ika Federal Constituency at the National Assembly made the call on Tuesday, 2nd of July, 2024 while sponsoring a motion on matter of urgent public importance during the resumption of the second legislative year of the House after a minor recess.
The motion titled “URGENT NEED TO END FOOD INSECURITY THROUGH MECHANIZED AGRICULTURAL REVOLUTION ACROSS THE COUNTRY” proposes establishment of 18000 hectares of land in the six geo agricultural zones in the country for cultivation of grains via mechanized farming to boost food production in Nigeria.
The Federal Lawmaker being worried by the current high cost of food products in the country, caused by insufficient food availability further reiterated that the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security should as matter of urgency, swing into action by implementing the 2022 National Agricultural Sample Census report published by National Bureau of Statistics in June 2024 and also support farmers with fertilizers, grant and non interest loans to boost food production in Nigeria in which will inturn expand the GDP of our economy and boost the Nation’s food Bank to adequately feed the citizens to avert malnutrition and death caused by hunger due to inadequate foods for consumption.
Rep. Jimbo’s motion also proposes the appointment of six seasoned Agriculturists to man the six Geo Agricultural zones when established with the sole mandate of aggressive cultivation on the 18000 hectares of land using mechanization method.
The motion was hastily adopted by the Federal Lawmakers due to it importance as it will affect Nigerians positively.
