Hon. Emeka Idu Advocates for Enhanced Biometric Security in Correctional Facilities and Community Development in Anambra

By Blessing Ishaku Iadi

Hon. Emeka Idu Godwin Obiajulu, the representative of Onitsha North and Onitsha South Federal Constituency, has called for the implementation of a robust biometric security system in correctional facilities across Nigeria to curb jailbreaks and enhance national security. During a recent parliamentary session, Hon. Idu emphasized the urgent need for immediate reforms to address the recurring problem of prison escapes due to inadequate inmate tracking systems.

Tackling Jailbreaks Through Biometric Data Capture

Hon. Idu highlighted the absence of a comprehensive biometric database for inmates, which makes it nearly impossible to track escapees once a jailbreak occurs. He proposed that all prisoners be registered with biometric identification systems, including fingerprinting and facial recognition, similar to those used in high-security institutions like the National Assembly.

> “If we have a proper biometric system in place, every inmate should be registered at their respective correctional centers, with fingerprints, facial recognition, and other identifiers stored securely. This will ensure that even if they escape, they can be easily traced and re-arrested,” he stated.

According to him, implementing such technology would not only deter inmates from attempting to escape but would also strengthen overall security measures in correctional facilities nationwide.

Commitment to Community Development and Welfare

Beyond security initiatives, Hon. Idu reaffirmed his commitment to improving the lives of his constituents. He credited his election victory to the goodwill he had built over the years through philanthropy and community development projects.

> “My people love me because of the good I have been doing for them even before I came into office. Now that I am here, my efforts have only increased. If I was paying school fees for 50 students before, now I am doing it for 200. If I provided 50 bags of rice for Christmas in the past, now I am bringing in thousands,” he said.

He also spoke about his efforts in securing employment opportunities for his constituents, revealing that he has facilitated the hiring of at least 15 to 20 individuals in various government agencies.

Addressing Insecurity with Solar-Powered Lighting

Hon. Idu underscored his efforts to enhance security in Onitsha North and South through the installation of solar-powered streetlights. He emphasized that criminals often operate under the cover of darkness, and well-lit streets serve as a deterrent to crime.

> “I don’t compromise on quality. In my constituency, we don’t use 60 or 80 watts; we go for 100 watts, using the best brands like Skytech and Felicity. These lights last for years and help drive away criminals who operate under the cover of darkness,” he explained.

Economic Hardship and the Way Forward

Addressing the ongoing economic challenges, Hon. Idu acknowledged the struggles of his constituents, citing hunger and unemployment as their most pressing concerns.

> “Hunger is the biggest issue my people bring to me. Parents are unable to pay their children’s school fees. Some families can’t even afford a single tuber of yam. That is why I personally provide rice and foodstuff to as many households as possible,” he stated.

While commending President Bola Tinubu’s administration for its economic recovery efforts, he urged the federal government to prioritize job creation, especially for young people, as a means of reducing crime.

> “A graduate who has been unemployed for five years is more likely to engage in criminal activities just to survive. If we provide jobs, we reduce the chances of insecurity,” he added.

Enhancing Security Through Vigilante Collaboration and Technology

Hon. Idu also advocated for stronger collaboration between local vigilante groups and national security agencies to combat crime more effectively. He praised the Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG) for their deep knowledge of the local terrain and their successful collaboration with the police, army, and DSS in tackling insecurity.

In addition, he called for the adoption of high-tech surveillance equipment, including drones and tracking devices, to monitor criminal activities in remote areas.

> “With advanced tracking tools, security forces can locate and capture criminals hiding in forests or hard-to-reach places. This was exactly how we were able to track down and arrest the seven suspects responsible for the killing of a House of Assembly member in Onitsha,” he revealed.

Hon. Emeka Idu’s proactive approach to security, employment, and community welfare continues to make a significant impact in Onitsha North and South. His advocacy for biometric security in correctional centers, investment in solar street lighting, and relentless efforts to combat hunger and unemployment reinforce his dedication to his constituents.

As Nigeria grapples with economic and security challenges, leaders like Hon. Idu serve as a beacon of hope, demonstrating that grassroots leadership can drive meaningful change.
