Dele Alake, one of President Bola Tinubu’s ministerial nominees, has voiced his support for the strengthening of social media regulations in Nigeria if he is appointed as the Minister of Information & Culture.

During the ministerial screening before the Senate on Wednesday, Alake, who hails from Ekiti State in the South West region and previously served as the Commissioner of Information & Strategy in Lagos State during Tinubu’s tenure as governor from May 1999 to May 2007, emphasized the need for more robust regulations governing social media platforms.

“The downside of social media is that it is detrimental to a good and decent society. What I would support is the strengthening of regulations,” Mr. Dele Alake expressed during the Senate hearing.

According to Alake, the application of existing laws that guide conduct in various areas of human endeavor has been lacking. He asserted that the focus should be on reinforcing these regulations and enforcing the laws already in place.

“There are laws that guide our conduct in every area of human endeavor, but the application of these laws has been shut,” Alake explained.

“I will recommend the strengthening of our regulations and the application of those laws. The laws must be tested so we can assess the proficiency of those regulations,” he added.

Dele Alake’s stance on social media regulation comes amid ongoing discussions on the impact and influence of social media in Nigerian society. While social media platforms have undoubtedly enabled communication and connectivity, they have also faced criticisms for spreading misinformation, hate speech, and contributing to the spread of fake news. As such, there have been calls for stricter regulations to curb these negative aspects and promote responsible usage.

As the screening process continues and ministerial appointments are finalized, Alake’s position on social media regulations will likely be subject to further scrutiny and debate. If appointed as the Minister of Information & Culture, his stance could shape the direction of future policies regarding social media regulation in Nigeria.
