Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has said that he has gotten the assurance of Nass for a favorable budget for road safety in 2025.
Corp Marshal Shehu said this while fielding questions from journalists on Thursday during the 2025 budget defense of the joint committee on Road Safety.
Shehu highlighted the need for public education to ensure compliance with traffic regulations and reduce road traffic crashes and fatalities. “The goal is to achieve zero injuries and deaths”.
He stressed the importance of public enlightenment and the need for more funding to enhance activities and deploy technology.
“We have gotten assurance that at least our budget for this year is going to be a good budget, since road safety as an agenda is a shared responsibility, where everyone is going to be on board.
“As far as road safety issue is concerned, it’s something that all of us need to be on board and make sure that even when drivers are driving, they should be able to obey the traffic regulation. Because we are losing so many lives on road traffic crashes and it shouldn’t be. It shouldn’t be at all, because if we’re abiding with the traffic regulation, that shouldn’t be an issue to us. We should also copy from other countries that record less crashes and less deaths.
“ We have to intensify our public enlightenment and education. We want to bring everyone on board as far as intensifying our public education and enlightenment is concerned so that those commuters, those drivers, should be able to know what is their right.
“They should be able to know what they are not supposed to do, and also abide by the type of regulation.
“We cannot just start enforcing fines without necessarily sensitizing them. So want to improve on that sensitization, and that’s why we ask for more funding for the Senate Committee and the House committee so we can continue with our work to save more lives” he said.
