A bill to prevent and prohibit the wanton destruction of public properties and assets has passed its second reading at the Delta State House of Assembly.

The bill titled ‘DELTA STATE PREVENTION AND PROHIBITION OF DESTRUCTION AND VANDALIZATION OF PUBLIC PROPERTIES AND PUBLIC ASSETS’ seeks to protect public properties and assets from intentional damage or destruction by hoodlums or vandals.

 

The bill sponsored by Chief James Augoye, member representing Okpe State Constituency will now proceed to the committee stage for review.

Presenting the bill, Chief James Augoye narrated his experience where he witnessed firsthand wanton destruction of public properties and assets by vandals during his tour of Local Government Areas in the State. He emphasized the need to address this growing ugly trend.

 

“To curb this ugly and escalating trend, it is imperative that we enact a law in our State to ensure the arrest and prosecution of anyone caught destroying public properties,” he stated.

 

He further emphasized the urgency of addressing the destruction of public properties, describing it as condemnable and unacceptable.

 

In advocating for a comprehensive framework to safeguard state assets, he highlighted the bill’s 6 parts and 53 clauses which outlined penalties for offenders urging his colleagues to support the bill.

 

Lending support to the bill, Majority Leader, Hon. Emeka Nwaobi, Chief Whip, Umukoro Awolowo Perkins, Oboro Preyor amongst others commended the bill describing it as timely and essential for the state’s development while also emphasizing that vandalism hinders service delivery. They unanimously called for the swift passage of the bill, recognizing its importance in preventing further damages to public properties and ensuring the state’s progress.

 

After thorough debate on the bill, House Speaker, Rt. Hon.Guwor Emomotimi Dennis applauded the contributions of lawmakers and referred it to the House Committee on Rules, Business, Ethics and Privileges for further review with an instruction to submit their findings in two weeks.
