‘I’m Still a Senator Despite Suspension’ – Akpoti-Uduaghan Fires Back
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, has strongly condemned her suspension from the Senate, describing it as an injustice that undermines the principles of natural justice, fairness, and equity.
Reacting to her suspension on Thursday via her Facebook page, the senator insisted that the decision does not strip her of her legitimacy as an elected representative of the people.
“Against the culture of silence, intimidation, and victim-shaming, my unjust suspension from the Nigerian Senate invalidates the principles of natural justice, fairness, and equity,” she wrote.
“The illegal suspension does not withdraw my legitimacy as a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and I will continue to use my duly elected position to serve my constituents and country to the best of my ability till 2027 and beyond,” she added.
The Senate had suspended Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months following the recommendations of its Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions, citing “total violation of the Senate Standing Orders, 2023 as amended.” As part of the suspension, her salaries and allowances were also put on hold.
Moments after the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, announced the decision, Akpoti-Uduaghan attempted to protest, declaring, “This suspension is not sustainable.” However, she was swiftly escorted out of the Senate chamber, and her microphone was turned off.
