Rivers Assembly Welcomes Supreme Court Verdict, Speaker Calls It a Victory for Democracy
The Rivers State House of Assembly has welcomed the Supreme Court’s judgment on the state’s prolonged political crisis, with Speaker Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule describing it as a victory for democracy and the rule of law.
During the 129th Legislative Sitting of the Second Session on Friday, House Leader Major Jack informed the Assembly of the Supreme Court’s ruling, which upheld the legitimacy of the current Assembly members and directed the House to resume sitting immediately.
The court also ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Accountant-General of the Federation to withhold funds from the Rivers State Government until an Appropriation Bill is presented to the properly constituted House. Additionally, it nullified the local government elections conducted in the state in October 2024.

Expressing gratitude to the Justices of the Supreme Court, Rivers’ political leader and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, and all those who contributed to upholding democratic principles, Speaker Amaewhule emphasized the significance of the judgment.
He also called on Governor Siminialayi Fubara to reconsider his actions and urged individuals holding government positions without the Assembly’s constitutional approval to step down immediately.
“We believe that now that the Supreme Court has spoken, Governor Siminialayi Fubara will repent from his legion of sins, and those criminals—those impostors parading themselves as government appointees without this House’s constitutional imprimatur—will desist forthwith,” Amaewhule stated.
